Making Memories and Mistakes!

Hey Go Girls! It’s Kelly (she/her/hers), your Go Girls! Art Teacher and I can’t believe that summer is over! This was definitely a summer like I’ve never experienced! This summer I did so many things I’ve never done before, like:

  • Teach Go Girls! Camp from my computer

  • Hang out with friends over Zoom

  • Protest racism in the streets

  • Make a gluten-free lemon almond cake

  • Grow my first cucumber

  • Talk to an online therapist

  • Meet Go Girls! From other states

  • Finish 8 Puzzles

This summer I also made a lot of mistakes. That's the thing, when I’m trying something new, I sometimes have to mess up a few times before I get it right. I’ve made mistakes working from home, making art, in my garden and with my friends. I’ve made mistakes as an educator and in my work learning to be a better ally and social justice advocate. But here’s the cool thing, with each mistake, I’m gaining the tools and skills to become a better me. To become a better artist, advocate, gardener, teacher, and friend.

One thing that’s helped me when making mistakes is trying to focus on the learning and growing part. I decided to make a ‘learn and grow jar’. Whenever I make a mistake, I try to think about how I can learn from this mistake. I write it down on a piece of paper and add it to the jar. Sometimes when I’m feeling frustrated or upset at myself, I open the jar and re-read all the ways I’ve grown. It helps me remember my strength, my improvements, and my shine!

I just wanted to remind you all that during these times- when so many things are new and different- we are all going to make mistakes! Embrace your mistakes, take them in, learn, grow, and become the best Go Girl! you can be!

I celebrate all your beautiful mistakes!

Peace, love and growth,

Kelly
